WEEK 7 - CASE STUDY

Madam has given a group assignment which is called a case study for our second assignment. We have to identify one scientist that had contributed to the science field. We have to read about their journey towards discovery. From their journey, we have to identify the components of the nature of science and do a critical analysis of it. We have to relate to what we have learned in the class to show our depth understanding of the nature of science. It must be specifically related to the scientific method components during their journey to discovery.

Our group has chosen Alexander Graham Bell as the scientist that has contributed to the science field. He is mostly known as the inventor of the telephone. It is one of the contributions that give the most benefit to society and people still use the telephone until today. Alexander also has many inventions throughout his life. He had invented mine detector, graphophone and twisted pair. Since he had 4 inventions, we decided that each of us write one invention for our case study.

I had chosen to write about graphophone for Alexander's invention. Graphophone is a phonograph for recording and reproducing sounds on wax records. It is an improved version of a phonograph that was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877. Alexander and his assistants began to improve in Edison's invention because later, they discovered that Edison's tinfoil records had deteriorated after several uses. He was interested in this invention because of the possible teaching aid of death. They started to experiment with a variety of material to replace the tinfoil and discovered that wax was better than tinfoil. Scientific knowledge is continuous because one discovery leads to another. The role of an experiment is important in science since Alexander discovers that wax has better longevity and sound fidelity and develop a new device from phonograph.
