WEEK 5 - SCIENCE IN OUR DAILY LIVES

NATURE OF SCIENCE

Science is the systematic study of natural phenomena and events. We learn about our world through science because science gives us an explanation about what and how our natural world works. The characteristic of science is that scientific research needs accessibility and update. Whatever knowledge is collected by one scientist, others must be able to see and comment. Another characteristic is scientific evidence has to be open to observation by all. It has to be measurable, and not just the opinion or guess of one person.

Next is about scientific explanation. A scientific explanation describes how a phenomenon happens in nature. The scientific explanations are based on data and observations. The explanation that can be tested which are based on beliefs and opinions are not considered scientific. Scientists have to examine all of the evidence they have when they want to develop an explanation. This is because the theory they are suggesting needs to match with all the evidence available.

Scientists are full of curiosity, creativeness and concern. They are rational, sceptical and unbiased as well. They use their senses and scientific tools while making their observation. Moreover, a scientist that want their theory or finding to be accepted need to provide the evidence that has undergoes all the rigorous testing. For example, peer review means that other scientists do the same experiment and if they got the same result so the theory or finding can be accepted. Hence, science teaches us to be more precise about our findings and not rely on our feelings or beliefs. It must be based on facts or experiments to prove that our work is right, and how it can benefit other people. They must use the knowledge for the benefits of other people. So, a scientist has to be honest when they find new knowledge and give to other people the same knowledge without asking for anything.

Furthermore, pseudoscience consists of ideas, opinions or practices believed to be logical and true but inconsistent with the scientific method. It does use scientific methods like science. So, the evidence which supports pseudoscientific claims may be ambiguous or lack any measurements. Some claims cannot be testable while the other claims are supported by personal experiences.

SCIENCE IN OUR DAILY LIVES

Science is important because it influences most aspects of our daily life, such as food, energy, medicine, transportation, leisure activities and more. It had made our lives easier and comfortable. Then, science keeps evolving. It can be some things that are subject to change. For example, our syllabus for today may not be used by future generations. Also. there might be new findings or theories in the future so the newest theory will be accepted but the oldest theory still can be used. The student in the future might learn other things as our technology is getting advanced day by day. That is why science is a continuous study. When we do research, we will discover new things during the experiment process. Then, being a scientist, we need to have a curiosity with our research so we will question every single thing in our research in order to achieve our goals. A scientist does not mean for someone doing their work in a lab but it is someone who follows the scientific investigation in a scientific way. So everyone can become a scientist as long as they follow the scientific investigation during the experiment.

"A scientist has three responsibilities: understand, explain and apply the results of the understanding."
(Edward Teller, 1991, p.15)
